Billions to Sneeze At

An idiot loaning insane amounts of cash to assholes who don’t deserve it, ruining the treasury? Carl Barks predicted the future!

This is not a very good reprint of this 1951 classic (it’s the first to feature Scrooge’s money swim). Apologies. This was part of a batch of Barks stories Gemstone didn’t have very good stats on, and thus resulted in some of the worst looking printings of Disney comic stories in North America ever.

  1. That’s actually a pretty good reporduction, even if it’s not from a high-quality stat.

I love this comic. It’s spot-on now that the US economy is going down the crapper.

    How wonderfully appropriate, Thad!

Oddly, if the traditional and conservative Barks ascribed any political undertones to the characters in the story, Donald would have been a Democrat! It would be funny, how the world DOES TURN, if it weren’t so damned sad!

  3. Yes, how dem stars do zwoosh—I mean, how the world does turn.
Great story. Lousy copy. I wish we’d waited to publish it till we had better materials, but them’s the breaks.

  4. Oh, how I love Uncla Carl.

Do you know if the complete Barks set is still happening?

I noticed it wasn’t on Amazon anymore.

  5. Not sure exactly when, but we do still hope to do it. More news as it becomes available.

  6. Considering that Donald doesn’t generally wear pants, it’s especially bad when he loses his shirt.

There is some discussion of the economics of McDuck at http://zenicurean.livejournal.com/157643.html

  7. Joe—

While Barks might have imagined Donald as a Democrat, Barks wouldn’t have seen the Republican Party of 1951 or of 2008 as particularly conservative.
