Sheldon Mayer's "Welfare Lunch"

A great Bo Bunny and Skinny Fox story from Funny Stuff No. 64. It’s a great example of how everybody in Mayer’s funny animal world are complete irredeemable bastards, yet you still find them interesting to read. “Dog eat dog”, “bunny kill fox”, “duck maim frog”; the combinations are endless in the Mayer universe. It’s amazing how well they hold up for repeated readings when you’re not supposed to like anybody.

Thanks to Frank for the scans. You should go to his blog and see some of the great early Lantz character stories by John Stanley he’s put up.

  1. Sheldon Mayer is a great cartoonist. I like that rabbit. He’s a very clever fellow. Thanks for posting this.

Necco Wafers. Made from pure aids.

  3. This is my favorite Sheldon Mayer funny animal story. You have fine taste, sir!

I helped out on the advisory board on a forthcoming hardcover anthology of classic “kids’ comics” from the 1930s to the ’60s. Sheldon Mayer’s work was met with INCREDIBLE hostility and loathing by many of my fellow advisory board members… especially these hard-edged funny animal stories.

There seems to be a lot of anti-Mayer sentiment among comics “afficionados” these days. Utter baloney! How could anyone look at this story and NOT see its inherent greatness and wit? I esk you…

  4. I haven’t read enough Mayer to choose all time favorites, but this would be at the top of what I’ve read.

Frank, I find that perplexing too. How could anyone snub this? I luckily haven’t experienced any Mayer-bashing (the closest was a conversation with Mike Barrier where he just claimed he wasn’t a fan), but it sounds like there’s similar snobbery with Mayer in comics groups as there is with Freleng in animation groups. Fuck ’em says I.
