You know, seeing that cartoon again I notice how haphazard the writing process seems to have been. There’s really no attempt to connect anything. The girls and elephant from the opening scene don’t appear in any later scenes, nor does Tessy appear in the musi-making sequence. Then, after a few minutes of “party” gags we have a few minutes of “Halloween” gags with hardly an indication we’re still at a party (it’s just Toby, Tessy, and some non-humanoid cow). No-one seems to be sure *who’s* invading the party either: a witch and four gnome things come down the chimney, then the next scene has a mosquito, a skeleton and that toga guy, then we’ve got the gag with the four bird skeletons, then after that all the invaders appear to be ghosts! It’s as if all the gagmen were told to come up with individual gags that had anything vaguely to do with Halloween and/or a party, then they all got turned into a cartoon without actually being linked together in any way.
Oh, and I like how the word “Smarty” isn’t translated in the subtitles. I guess they thought it was Toby’s name.
Spectre, shame on you. The stories in the golden age were written in pictures, which means they are by definition perfect and beyond criticism at all times. Artists are more likely to write a good cartoon, and the staff plotting HALLOWEEN elegantly avoided using any form of prose during production—in fact, a few couldn’t even read or write if they tried. Therefore, there can be nothing wrong with this cartoon’s plotline. That lack of continuity you’re seeing? You’re not seeing it.
He’s very awesome! Pervis is too cool!
Wow, Tom is quite the sculptor!
