Three Happy Chappies

Here’s a terrible story from Walt Disney’s Comics & Stories #50 (Nov. 1944), written by Chase Craig, and drawn by Carl Buettner. I guess Craig “invented” some personalities for José and Panchito without having seen either of them in actual action, or else mistook their rowdiness from the film for stupidity. Whatever. Still a lame story. I just like it for the slick art and inking. Watch for an unauthorized appearance by Daffy as the soda jerk.

To me, the strangest thing about this story was its “All Bird Cast”! …Not a Disney Dog Nose or Pig Snout in sight!

Not surprisingly, in this all-bird tale, Chase Craig may have chosen “wing it” with the personalities of Jose and Panchito.

After all, how close did ANY of those old Western comics come in characterization. Look at Donald or Bugs – never mind the Road Runner! But, we loved ‘em anyway!

Wow. Jose and Panchito are written here as if they’re either from another planet or they’ve been living under a rock for their entire lives. In the movies they always seemed much more competent than Donald, and nowhere near this ignorant. And attempting to write out their speech patterns makes for awkward reading.

Thad, do you know the reason why all(?) comic incarnations of Donald put him in a black shirt?

  4. “Terrible” is an understatement.

There was a “Walt Disney Presents” episode where Donald hosted Jose’s visit to America, really a compilation show, but was handled MUCH better than this.

If that’s Daffy Duck then I’m Mickey Mouse!
