Down to Girth

Here we have a Fox & Crow story drawn by Jim Davis that eerily predates modern dietary methods. This one gets extremely far-out, even for this series, with its gratuitous morbid obesity, cannibalism, and heads naturally made of iron. I’ve spent some time reacquainting myself with these guys lately, and most of the ones from roughly 1948-54 still hold up as the best funny animal comics DC published.

Taken from The Fox and Crow #18 (Aug. 1954).

This makes me wish that Screen Gems had done at least one Fox and Crow cartoon done in Jim Davis’ style or at least written by him. These seem to have a lot more character than most of the original shorts that I’ve seen had, and the drawings are super funny and appealing.

Too bad that the studio was for the most part was very mismanaged and lacked quality control over their shorts, even with Dave Fleischer as one of the producers at one point. Harry Cohn should have done something about it. Seriously…

  2. Hi Thad.

These comics were neat. I love the Fox and Crow cartoons. They really were under-appreciated little gems from the Golden Age.

I hope I’m not coming across as annoying for asking you this, but would you mind posting the F&C cartoon called “Robin Hoodlum”? I’d appreciate it greatly.

  3. Be fair, Thad! I haven’t the least sympathy for Crow, but it is certainly not cannibalism for any bird to eat any mammal, however reprehensible it might be on other grounds!
